What are the major cities wearing this winter?
By Sarah Sullivan
Forget heading to Paris, New York and Milan for inspiration this season (can’t travel there anyway). The best place to find what’s trending is right here. We’ve just released our Bi-Annual Fashion and Beauty Trend Report for Autumn/Winter 2021 and it’s full of ideas and inspiration based on where you’ve been shopping and what you’ve been buying.
Accessories have been a real hit this season, as you’ve looked to zhuzh up your outfits post lockdown. Rings, eyewear, chunky bangles, and long necklaces appeared in shopping carts all over the country. And you paired those pieces with timeless wide-leg pants and translucent fabrics like organza, lace and mesh.
Now, let’s take a sneak peek over the neighbours’ fence to see what look each of the major capital cities has been shopping for.
Brisbane fashion pick: Rings
Brisbane fashion is running rings around the other majors, with stunning jewellery designs in opulent shades of gold and silver.
What’s great about rings is that they can worn as a standalone statement piece or stacked up on one or more fingers.
And who said chains were only for wearing around the neck? This season’s must have is the chain ring. Wear it chunky on the middle finger or go superfine with a precious stone for a more elegant look.
Sydney fashion pick: Eyewear
Sydney, you don’t need to try hard to be cool. That picturesque harbour and outdoor lifestyle gives you an edge that other cities can only dream of. So, it’s no surprise your fashion pick for winter 2021 is eyewear.
Catch the winter sun and make a statement in oversized frames. Not only are they on-trend, but they also provide great protection for your eyes. Double bonus.
Frames that riff on the OG aviator are also popular this season. Metallic frames are always a hit, but don’t be afraid to mix it up with tortoiseshell or coloured clear frames, or go for an angular aviator for something different.
Melbourne fashion pick: Scarves
Style is in Melbourne’s DNA. Take a walk down any street and you’re spoiled for choice. But it can get a little frosty in the southern state come mid-year, so it makes sense that you chose scarves as your must-have winter 2021 piece.
When it comes to scarves, rules are made to be broken. You can style them to suit what you’re wearing, to match how you’re feeling or to just keep the cold at bay.
Wear it big like a shawl and drape it over one shoulder; go the classic wrap-around-the-neck and pair it with a blazer; throw on a pair of boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt and finish it with a blanket scarf, or go with an oversized coat and thick scarf to complete the warm but stylish look.
Adelaide fashion pick: Tailored pants
Adelaide is full of Australia’s bests: restaurant, hotel, wine, gin and beach (now that sounds like the formula for a great weekend!) It’s also home to a growing fashion scene with chic inner-city boutiques now lining the streets.
Like so many other great cities around the world, tailored pants featured strongly in your fashion pick for the season. Looks like they’ve kicked track pants and jeans to the curb, becoming a staple thanks to their versatility.
They are an instant hit with an oversized coat and designer sneakers. Or wear them like your track pants and team them with your favourite sweatshirt. They also pair nicely with a tee and flats or for something a little more glamorous, add a heel—strappy works best.
Perth fashion pick: Organza shirts
Perth, you’ve got confidence without even trying and your decision to shop organza this season just confirms this. The secret to pulling off this look is layering.
Organza shirts with puffy sleeves or ruffles take the cake. Pair them with a matching tonal top and tailored pants for a look that just exudes style and sophistication.
For something more relaxed, go for a boyfriend shirt over a bralette and complete the look with jeans and white sneakers. And the sheer maxi dress worn over a bodysuit delivers easy glamour.
