Afterpay: What are some of your favourite 2023 trends that you’ll be taking into the new year?
Dom: “This has been the year of strength training for me. I love lifting weights because it is challenging – not only physically, but mentally. I can better handle tough things in my life because I tackle tough exercises at the gym. I know that might sound silly to someone who hasn’t done it before, but it really is true! My favourite activewear brands to wear to the gym are The Upside, Aje Athletica and Crop Shop Boutique.
Another trend I will be taking with me into 2024 is the clean girl aesthetic, it showed me how a little [makeup] really goes a long way.I live for the ‘strawberry makeup’ look, which I recreate with the Off Duty Cream Blush Stick in Juicy from Mecca in Juice for my cheeks, lips and eyelids. I also started wearing my hair in a sleek bun with a hair mask in – like Olaplex Number 3 – it’s the best hack ever for super soft, healthy hair.”
A: What habits do you hope to kick in the new year, and which ones are you going to kick-start?
D: “After having a skin cancer scare, I now only go to the beach in the mornings or late-afternoons when the UV isn’t as strong. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and as much as I adore laying in the sunshine, it is so important we look after our skin. I wear SPF every single day; for my face, I love the Ultra Violette Supreme Screen Hydrating Facial SKINSCREEN SPF50+ and for my body, the We are Feel Good Inc. Signature Sunscreen Lotion SPF50+.
Next year I also want to really embrace slowing down more, and disconnecting to reconnect. Journaling has been a habit of mine for many years, but in 2024 I want to take this further by incorporating daily breath-work. This Kikki K Calm Journal is the perfect way to nail both at once.”
A: What new things are you most excited to try in 2024?
D: “I want to really get better at doing a winged liner, and playing around with hair and makeup. A Dyson Airwrap is definitely on my wish-list for 2024 – I want to achieve that bouncy blow wave from home.
In terms of my health, I want to embrace more alcohol-free hangouts with friends – nature walks, home-cooked dinners and other experiences that don’t involve drinking.”
A: What was your 2023 ‘era’?
D: “2023 was definitely my ‘fancy girl era’. Post Covid-19 lockdowns, I just wanted to dress up; I loved vibrant colours and big statement jewellery, and I wore heels more than ever. Bec and Bridge and Meshki have been some of my go-to’s this year for going-out pieces that I can wear again and again.”
A: What era are you entering in 2024?
D: “In 2024, I’m going to enter my ‘effortless era’; I want to have key pieces in my wardrobe that I can wear over and over again. A good pair of jeans, white tanks, cool girl sunnies and some staple dresses will be my go-to – I love the idea of not thinking about the look too much.”
A: If you could look into a crystal ball, what do you think we are going to be obsessed with in 2024?
D: “I personally think that we are collectively learning to embrace our natural flaws and quirks more and I really hope this continues in 2024. I also feel like 2023 was the year of short hair and 2024 will see long hair have its moment. Next year we will see long hair for the cool girl –a loose wave, and some layers.”
