My capsule wardrobe contains exactly one pair of black boots, one pair of training shoes, one pair of sandals that are saved for beach days and four pairs of sneakers.

I just can’t get enough of them, and if 2022 has shown us anything, it’s that sneakers still have a firm grip on the global footwear stage. (Lucky for me!)

This year, sneakerheads have worn white sneakers, platform sneakers, velcro strap sneakers, high-top sneakers, dad sneakers, suede sneakers – the list goes on. And if you want to skip to the good part and find out which pairs are the best, you’ve come to the right place!

This is your guide to the top trending sneakers in 2022. No matter what style you’re after, you’ll find it here and be ready to slay your next outfit, because these kicks are the best of the best.

Let’s jump in.

Best Fashion Sneaker: Adidas Gazelle

Consider this our overall winner, because the Adidas Gazelle has everything we want in a sneaker. With a heritage tracing back to the ‘60s, the Gazelle’s retro silhouette is now complemented by a lightweight and low-cut design, suede or leather uppers and a range of colourways. If chunky sneakers aren’t for you (keep reading, chunky lovers, we’ve got something for you soon!) then the Gazelle is ideal. It’s minimalist, low to the ground and adorned with the classic Adidas three stripes on each side for just a splash of “look at me” energy.

Best White Sneaker: Reebok Club C 85

Forgive us a moment for playing favourites, but the 85 Vintage is our fave version of Reebok’s cult classic Club C sneaker. Sitting somewhere between slim and chunky, the monochromatic design is peppered with sparse dots of colour, whether it’s around the collar or on the tongue, while creamy or off-white uppers give it a retro feel. They go with almost any outfit, whether you’re dressing for a first date, your performance review or an athleisure walk with the brunch girlies.

Best Platform Sneaker: Puma Mayze Stack

Sneakerheads, rise up! Literally, in the case of the Mayze, Puma’s platform sneaker with a supersized rubber sole. With a variety of styles to choose from, including black and white, suede and even white with metallic accents, the Mayze is an easy win for best platform sneaker of the year.

Best Retro Sneaker: New Balance 327

I distinctly remember my grandpa wearing a pair of sneakers like this, and you know what? Grandpa was a style icon. With a versatile and contemporary silhouette, oversized New Balance branding and suede accents on certain models, the New Balance 327 needs to be added to cart ASAP if you want to dress like it’s 1972 and/or 1995.

Best Chunky Sneaker: Fila Disruptor II

The chunky look isn't for everyone, but those who love it really love it. The Fila Disruptor II is a signature chunky sneaker – the thicc and angular midsole not only makes a fashion statement wherever you go, it also keeps you comfy all day long. A grippy outsole completes the look, while tonal stitching, secured lacing and a padded ankle collar make this sneaker too good to pass up.

Best High-Top Sneaker: Converse Run Star Motion

When we get to talking high-tops, it has to be Converse. But this isn’t your ordinary Converse – the Run Star Motion is a modern take on the classic canvas high-top thanks to the two-toned, chunky platform sole. Combined with the classic Chuck 70 upper, and the Run Star Motion is a sneaker that will have heads turning.

Best Velcro Sneaker: Adidas Forum

Let’s step back even further to the age when velcro sneakers were the hottest item you could be seen wearing in the playground. Velcro sneakers are still trending and they’re still amaze, like the Adidas Forum. Our favourite thing about these sneakers is how many styles they come in. There’s a pair for everyone, whether you want bright colours, natural tones or hightops.

Best Kid’s Sneaker: Puma x Pokémon

These crossover kicks won our award for the best sneakers for kids but I’ll say it: I would wear these and I’m 28 years old. There are three styles to choose from, each featuring a different Pokémon: the Charmander-adorned Puma Invader, Pikachu’s electric yellow Puma Rider and the soothing blue Puma Suede for Squirtle.
